"Staring into pools of gin clear water has always been something of a meditation for me. The mysterious distortions lend themselves to a natural form of abstraction, bending shapes and colors, twisting forms, blending and changing them until a flicker of odd movement brings the surreal back to reality. For an angler or fisherman this is often accompanied with a shocking surge of adrenaline that can make your hands shake so much it can be tough to put any grace into your next cast.
This is the second in a series of paintings I have been wanting to do for years. As much as I like painting fish, fish paintings often have a tendency to be just a little too obvious for me. A painting should hold a sense of mystery and discovery for the viewer allowing them to interpret and see new things time after time. In this piece I was concentrating more on abstract shapes and movement in the water to portray a trout rising from the bottom of a clear pool to sip a fly from the surface. Painted with chunky, thick acrylic brushstrokes and enough realism to portray the subjects but also impressionistic and expressionistic enough to make it a little more exciting so that it moves on its own." ~ Savlen
